Suchań and the Hanging Cave at Kroczyce 2014

2014.08.08 -

2nd August opened the new season of excavation at Suchań and in the Hanging Cave at Kroczyce.

The archaeological team at Suchań headed by dr Bartłomiej Rogalski of the Archaeological Division of the National Museum in Szczecin includes mgr Szymon Modzelewski, PhD student at the Institute of Archaeology, and 18 students from the University of Warsaw and the University of Szczecin. This year’s fieldwork is focusing on the central area of the settlement with the greatest anomalies identified by the geophysical survey. The first days of the dig brought in a large quantity of pottery fragments attributed to Lusatian Culture and to the Late Pre-Roman and the Roman Period. There are plans to investigate around 600 m2. After the dig, in mid-October, the National Museum in Szczecin will open an exhibition dedicated to the treasures of Suchań (“Skarby Suchania”), accompanied by a catalogue in Polish and English.

The team working at the Hanging Cave at Kroczyce headed by mgr Marcin Rudnicki includes dr Andrzej Maciałowicz and 15 students, some of them participants of the English-language course, all from the Institute of Archaeology University of Warsaw. The fieldwork is focusing on the area of the main chamber which retains an undisturbed deposit dating to the Iron Age. The first exciting find made on the opening day of the dig was a gold suspension loop, presumably from a solidus.

The fieldwork at Suchań and Kroczyce will continue until the end of August with consultation from Professor Aleksander Bursche, Maestro Project coordinator.
