Conference Inter Ambo Maria, 2012

An international conference Inter Ambo Maria. Northern Barbarians from Scandinavia towards the Black Sea took place in Gaspra village (Crimea, Ukraine) on 3-7.10.2012, being a continuation of the first meeting two years ago. Organizers of the conference became: Department of Monuments and Sites, Vest-Agder County Council (Kristiansand, Norway), National Taurida University (Simferopol, Ukraine) and “Heritage of Millennia” non-profitable foundation for history and archaeology (Simferopol, Ukraine).

In the conference took part about 50 scholars from Ukraine, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Germany, France, Slovakia and Czech Republic. They presented dozens of papers and posters – plenty of new materials (e.g. chamber grave at Poprad, new hoards with enameled decorated artefacts, Mutin cemetery) and new interpretations of old finds (e.g. Sösdala and Młoteczno/Hammersdorf finds). The problems of ethnic and cultural identity of particular phenomena inspired strong discussion.

The participants of the conference took part in the excursions to the Roman fortress of Charax and to the capital of Crimean Goths atop Mangup mountain
