19th General Congress of Polish Historians

Several scholarly contributions relevant to our Project were presented during the 19th General Congress of Polish Historians, held 17-12 September 2014 at the Szczecin University under the Honorary Patronage of President Bronisław Komorowski, during a special session dedicated to “Mediterranean Europe” and “Baltic Europe”: prof. dr hab. Maciej Salamon (Jagiellonian University) spoke about contacts between the Baltic and the Black Sea regions, 3rd to 11th century (Znad Bałtyku nad Morze Czarne w III-XI w.), prof. dr hab. Marek Wilczyński (Pedagogical University of Cracow) addressed the subject of Germanic kingdoms in the Mediterranean region (Ludy znad mórz północnych nad Morzem Śródziemnym. Germańskie królestwa w strefie śródziemnomorskiej i „morskie akcenty” w ich polityce wobec Imperium Romanum w V i VI w n.e.), prof. dr hab. Jan Prostko-Prostyński (Adam Mickiewicz University) presented his study on a Roman senator on the Baltic Sea during the 6th century (Rzymski senator nad Bałtykiem w VI wieku), prof. dr hab. Henryk Samsonowicz  (University of Warsaw) explored the question of the existence of a “Baltic Europe” (Czy istniała Europa bałtycka?), and prof. dr hab. Aleksander Bursche (University of Warsaw), the head of the MPOV Project, reported his findings on the origins of Germanic coinage and influx of know-how to the northern Barbaricum in Late Antiquity (Narodziny pieniądza germańskiego. Napływ know-how do północnego Barbaricum w późnym antyku). Polish language abstracts: http://pthszczecin.pl/program/sympozja/europa-srodziemnomorska-i-europa-baltycka/. Our only quibble is that there was not enough time for an in-depth discussion of the presentations.
